HERNIATED DISCS

HERNIATED DISCS

A herniated disc, also referred to as a slipped disc, ruptured disc, or disc herniation, is one of the most common causes of back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and arm pain. Often, people visit a spine specialist for back pain or neck pain and unknowingly have a herniated disc. Herniated discs affect the vertebrae, the bones that make up your spine, and the spinal discs, which provide support and flexibility to your back.

Herniated discs occur when the inner part of the discs in your spine are pushed out through a tear in the outer layer of the disc. This herniated disc puts pressure on the nerves in your spine and can cause back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and arm pain.

Herniated Disc Causes

Herniated discs are often caused by disc degeneration or weakening of the spinal discs. This can occur gradually over a long period of time due to normal wear and tear and aging. Traumatic injuries such as a fall or strain, sports injuries, and overuse can also cause disc herniation.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

Symptoms of a herniated disc vary depending on the location of the disc herniation in the spine.

Patients with a herniated lumbar disc (herniated disc in the lower back) commonly include symptoms that affect the lower back, buttocks, hips and legs. These symptoms include:

  • Lower back pain that may radiate to the leg (sciatica)
  • Lower back pain that increases when sitting or with movement
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg
  • Limited mobility and difficulty walking

Patients with a herniated cervical disc (herniated disc in the neck) commonly include symptoms that affect the upper back, neck, shoulder, arms and hands. These symptoms include:

  • Mid to upper back pain
  • Neck pain especially when moving the head
  • Pain that radiates down the arm (radiculopathy)
  • Shoulder pain
  • Weakness, tingling or numbness in the arm or hand
  • Limited range of motion and difficulty moving your arm
