Referred to as the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda has a wealth of places one can go primate tracking and briefly described below;
Kibale forest national park; this is located in the western part of the country just about 6hours from Kampala, the country’s capital or 7hours from the Entebbe airport. Kibale boosts of a great primate variety and density and its popular for the Chimpanzee tracking primate safaris. It has over 1500 Chimps and other 12 species of primates and its regarded as the “World’s Primate capital”. There are mainly 3 primate tracking sessions in the forests guide by UWA certified ranger guides. They start earl morning at 8am, mid-morning hours at 11am and in the afternoon. Visitors can spend about 3hours or more on a forest walk to meet the primates.
Budongo Forest Reserve; this is located in the northwestern part of Uganda and its part of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, which is Uganda’s popular wildlife destination known for the big game safaris. This Mahogany and iron-wood forest has over 8primates including Chimpanzees and visitors here can start a primate tracking session at any hour of the day with most appropriate ones being morning and afternoon sessions.
Kalinzu forest and Kyambura Gorge; these two destinations are located close to Queen Elizabeth national park southwestwards. Kalinzu is a forest reserve with a small community of about 60Chimpanzees some of which are habituated for visitor tracking while Kyambura Gorge is located in the Kyambura wildlife reserve which is part of the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area. It is a small gorge in the Kyambura reserve, and its referred to as the “Valley of Apes” with a stunning atmosphere to meet the Chimps and other primates.
Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla Parks; These two are Uganda’s national parks known for sheltering the prestigious mountain gorillas and popular for offering gorilla trekking experiences. They’re located in the far southwestern part of the country with Bwindi enjoying a world heritage status from UNESCO. Gorilla tracking in these two parks is the main activity while visitors can enjoy forest walks to track other primates found here.
Primate tracking in Rwanda
Nyungwe Forest National Park; the nearly 1’020sq.km park is a UNESCO rainforest park known for sheltering the Chimpanzee great apes and close to 11 other primates hence being a rewarding primate tracking destination. It offers otherworldly canopy walk on top of the primate experiences and here visitors can meet a number of Albertine rift endemics. Primate tracking sessions like Chimpanzee tracking start early morning and in the afternoon hours.
Volcanos National Park; this is a popular tourist destination known for the outstanding Gorilla trekking adventures in Rwanda. The park is a UNESCO heritage site known for sheltering the prestigious and endangered Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys. It by far Africa’s most celebrated gorilla trekking destination.
